If you are just starting out there is no way you can afford to get website traffic the way the big boys do. They get traffic the old way and that is spend spend spend. Unless you just got a big inheritance or won the lottery you have to find a cheaper way to generate web traffic. Below are listed the top ways to get that traffic and some sites that will help.

Exchange Links

Believe it or not there are many webmasters out there in the same boat as you. They can’t afford to buy traffic or are unwilling to but they know they need it. A sure and proven method is to exchange links with these guys. You will hardly ever see someone running a website who doesn’t want to exchange links with you. It would be like turning down good free advertising and if someone turns that down they need their head checked. I have found a couple of social sites that are full of webmasters looking to get with other people and promote each other’s sites. Just keep in mind that your site needs to be legitimate enough that someone would want to be associated with you and most importantly for both of your sakes the niche and the content of the sites should be the same. Here are two I recommend:

MyBlogLog – This site is made up of communities that are actually just links to your blog. Join a blog’s community and message the owner offering to exchange links. I caution you to check out their blog first because I have noticed some people are just putting a sales page out there and are not interested in exchanging or even communicating with you.
Blog Catalog- Check out the groups especially the ones dealing with promoting your blog. You will see many offers for link exchanges.

Write and Submit Articles

I know I bring this one up a lot and there is a reason, it works. One of the fastest and easiest ways to generate targeted web site traffic is writing and submitting articles to the e-zines and online encyclopedias. Link back to your site in the biographical section and you will see increase in your web site traffic.

As I have stated before on this blog one of the biggest struggles in internet marketing is increasing web site traffic. When getting started, internet marketers face so much information on this subject and much of it is wrong and only worked pre-Web 2.0. If you can learn to master the new ways to generate web traffic you are on your way to success. There are a few simple strategies that when followed will increase traffic to your website.

Social Media Marketing is not only fun but an easy way to get you free web site traffic if it is done right. Twitter and Facebook would have to be the top two sites you should use to begin your traffic getting strategy. Although there are many others, developing a strong presence in these two will begin your rise to the top. You should avoid spamming your connections in any sites but you should share information that is helpful and adds value to the reader’s lives.

Video marketing is extremely effective in driving traffic to my website and it can be for yours also. Whether you are using someone’s video to sell their product as an affiliate, or you are making your own, video gives people a graphic view of what you are saying. It’s a fact that people will click and watch a video before they would read an article. For this reason Google holds more value with a video and it will rank faster and higher than other forms of content.

Lastly, article marketing is one of the best ways to generate web traffic. Writing good articles and linking back to your website not only increases your targeted website traffic but also makes you a subject matter expert on whatever you are writing about. This in turn leads to people checking your site more often to see what you are saying.

These three strategies alone if mastered will have you far ahead of many of the newbies as well as the veterans out there. When I am trying to increase website traffic I follow a step by step check off list from Jeff Johnson’s underground training lab I obtained from his site CLICK HERE. It is free and has been a great help in me obtaining the success I have gotten in my IM career.

Lately one of the hot things in internet marketing is link wheels and link wheeling. What we are talking about is using Web 2.0 property sites and linking them to each other. The old school method of linking had the internet marketer linking the properties back to their money site but now a lot of internet “gurus” are using the fairly new concept of linking the sites together so it looks like a wheel .

I have implemented this strategy on my sites and it is unbelievable how many links I’m getting. The only problem is if you do this manually it could take days, if not weeks to submit to the Web 2.0 properties for every page or post. It is time consuming and most of the people who can afford it outsource the work. If you are like me you will have to find an inexpensive shortcut for doing the bookmarking and there are a few out there that work really well. I’m going to recommend what I use and that is Bookmarking Demon. I don’t particularly like the name of this software but it cuts down greatly on the time it takes to get a site moving up in the search engines. I would suggest you take a look at the free video guide and eBook that they offer to see if this would be something you could use. To check out the FREE video and eBook please click on this link: Bookmarking Demon then go to YouTube and search for videos of how to use a link wheel.

If you haven’t turned on a computer in years or have been hiding out in a cave I have some news for you. Web 2.0 is here and is now dominating the Internet. If you are in the business and not using Web 2.0 properties to increase web site traffic you are behind the times.

What is Web 2.0 you ask and how do I get it? For that answer we will start at our friend Wikipedia the free encyclopedia. It defines Web 2.0 as “”Web 2.0″ is commonly associated with web development and web design that facilitates interactive information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design[1] and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Examples of Web 2.0 include web-based communities, hosted services, web applications, social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, mashups and folksonomies. A Web 2.0 site allows its users to interact with other users or to change website content, in contrast to non-interactive websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of information that is provided to them.” In other words we are talking about sites that allow users to interact with each other. Ever hear of Facebook, My Space, or Twitter? They are some of more well known properties that have exploded recently.

Facebook, a social networking site, right now has more than 200 million users. MySpace has over 100 million users, and Twitter has by estimates 10-12 million users. Your job is to get your message out to these millions of users. How do you do it?

Try going viral which means get the word out to as many as you can, be it through blog posts, twittering, or YouTube videos. The viral part comes when those sites or subscribers to those sites share your message with others who share it with others. Video sites like YouTube are the best for doing this and the search engines whose job is increasing web site traffic to your site loves them.

Another step in getting increased web site traffic through Web 2.0 is using the social networks. As mentioned before there are quite a few of these sites and quite a few subscribers to these sites. You have to join them and use the tools within them to get whatever message you want out there. Either you, or someone you outsource to, needs to spend time on these sites building up your message. It is a critical part of Web 2.0 and will go far to increase traffic to your website.

Blogging is also part of Web 2.0 and in fact may be the defining element. Web Site traffic means customers, which leads to sales and there is no simpler way to put it. You have to write good content and update your blog or website frequently. Doing these things and exploiting Web 2.0 properties will ensure that you have a successful online business.
