Link baiting is a technique that is used by website owners to increase web site traffic by getting backlinks from websites in the same niches. Although link baiting has been associated with black hat concepts it is actually acceptable in the white hat or clean SEO practices.

This way of increasing traffic to your website gets its name from the hooks you provide on a website thus the baiting reference. These hooks are also referred to as resource hooks, news hooks, and humor hooks as well as other names. What you are trying to do is provide bait on your hooks just like in fishing to attract a visitor to click to your website. As you are using other people’s websites and forums, link baiting is a cheap but efficient source of advertising.

Once you have hooked the visitor to your website the job is not complete. When they visit your site, as a good webmaster you must provide high quality content that is updated on a consistent basis. If you provide what people want they will not be angry at you for directing them to the site and will probably come back in the future or take advantage of any offers you may be promoting.

Of course, if you are totally misrepresenting your site or linking someone to an adult or gambling site when they don’t want you may be doing more harm than good for your reputation. Good SEO practices plus a little advertising in such legal ways as link baiting will give you a chance to become successful in your internet marketing.
