In an earlier post I recommended Google Analytics as a tool you need if you are into marketing your website for any reason. If you haven’t installed Google Analytics now would be a good time to do it so you can follow this short primer on how to use it to increase web site traffic. Sign up now by clicking on this link: Google Analytics

You will have to have it installed for 24 hours before you will see stats on your website but it is an incredible and powerful tool that will help you analyze your website. What we will concentrate on here is the stats part of GA.

When looking at your dashboard in GA you can see several things concerning your site for the last month. They include the number of visitors to your site, a pie chart showing where your traffic is coming from, and the most popular pages and posts on your site/blog.

The pie chart breaks the traffic down into 4 sources that give you an idea of where your site gets traffic from. The four sources are direct traffic, search engines, referring sites, and other. Direct traffic comes from the folks who type in your address in their browser, from a browser bookmark, or from somewhere other than directly from a website.

Search engine traffic comes from search engines such as Google, Yahoo or any other search engine and is broken down even further. You can check the section underneath the pie chart which says view report and you can view what specific search engines are sending traffic to your site.

Referring sites show you all the traffic referred to you. If you are viewing the report it is broken down into the domains that have sent you the most traffic and also the keywords that people used to find your site. You can use this information to see what sources are sending you the most traffic such as specific forums and blogs that you have been commenting on. You can then analyze whether you should spend time trying to get traffic from these sites or look for other sources of traffic. Also in the report you can analyze what keywords are working best for your site. You may be surprised to find that some keywords you are not even using are increasing your web site traffic.

Included in the GA reports are the top pages that people are landing on when going to your web site and you can increase website traffic by writing more on the subject contained on these pages. Likewise, you can also see where your visitors are going after leaving your site.

As you can see GA will tell you a lot of information about your site and your visitors so you can make decisions on how you will work towards getting new website traffic by offering where they go and what they want.
